Geoff Shell - Composer
Born in Park Ridge and raised in Deerfield, Illinois, Geoff was
brought up in a musical family, his father being a music teacher and
professional clarinetist. In 2000, Geoff entered Berklee College of
Music with a desire to write orchestral music and score films. He received the prestigious Doug Timm
award and earned his first commission as a composer from the
University of Chicago Wind Ensemble.
After graduating with a BM in Film Scoring in Fall 2004, Geoff Shell
was selected from a competitive group to work as a freelance composer
/ sound designer for Michael Avery, Head of Educational Product
Development at Sibelius Software Ltd., one of the world’s leading
music software businesses. While developing content for them, Geoff
also studied composition from composer and composition professor
Andrew List to help write a new work for Wind Ensemble. This was his
second commission, this time granted by his high school band director,
Dan Brame. The piece was premiered in Geoff’s hometown. In 2005 Geoff
composed and conducted the music score of Red Thread.
